*T&Cs applyThe eerie history of the Paris Catacombs, a subterranean maze beneath Paris, France's streets, dates back to the late 1700s. The catacombs were once deserted limestone quarries that supplied the city with building supplies. But as Paris grew and its cemeteries filled up, efforts were made to find a way to deal with the health risks that these overflowing graveyards posed to the general public.
The choice was taken in the late 1700s to move the remains of millions of Parisians to the abandoned quarries. Over several years, workers organized and artistically arranged the skeletal remains as they moved the bones, a process that started in 1786.
